As Pevsner says, this is a building without poetry, but beautifully placed above Morecambe Bay. The foundation stone of the church was laid in 1843 but it was not completed until1853. Originally in the Chester Diocese it was enrolled in the bishop of Carlisles Register of Deeds in 1910. Designed by George Webster of Kendall, it is Early English in style, although it exhibits details that have, perhaps, a Moorish feel ..a strange concoction. It is based on a simple plan form and built of limestone with a tower and spire at the west end. However, the Sanctuary is apsidal giving interest to both the interior and exterior. The stained glass is by Powell of Whitefriars with later examples by the well known firm of Shrigley and Hunt. Of note is the stained glass window in the apse by Wilhelmina Geddes. It shows Christ emerging from the tomb but with only one foot visible. The building underwent a major refurbishment in 1998, apparently partly funded by the very first Heritage Lottery Fund grant.
