Pevsner says this is the "best church in Barrow" and perhaps this is reflected in the Grade II* listing; is it worthy of its designation? A fine and spacious building with a massive spire it is built of red brick with blue engineering brick patterns and stone details. However, it is perhaps not the most inspiring of designs. The architect was E.G Paley, who was joined by Austin during the construction of the church. The interior is a lofty space with unusually slender columns supporting brick arches. It is a pity that the grey brick above the arches has been painted white and detracts from the original design intention, although this must enliven a sombre interior. It was consecrated in 1869 but St James was badly damaged during the second world war. In the 1990s it was extensively restored with help from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the large vestries converted to community use. There is a Mayoral pew at the rear of the church; an unusual arrangement and it is claimed that the organ came from St James Palace and was played at Queen Victoria's wedding.
