It is suggested that there was an earlier church on the site. The present building is, according to Pevsner, of 1891 and by J.W Grundy & Sons. However the Quinquennial report dates the church as of 1865 and more significantly by E.G Paley. James Price in his book "Sharpe, Paley and Austin: A Lancaster Architectural Practice 1836- 1942", attributes a new church in 1865, at Woodlands, to E.G Paley. If this is the case and because of the buildings association with the architectural firm of E.G. Paley, further research is needed and consideration should be given to listing the church as Grade II. It is small church, constructed of rubble slate with ashlar details, with a rectangular Nave an apsidal east end. A good example of its type, the building has a charm enhanced by its attractive setting.
