There was originally a chapel of ease on the site which dated from 1642; we know this as a brass plate confirms its building, by a Londoner who was born here. In 1774 the chapel was consecrated but in 1795-6 it was rebuilt with an attached school. In 1833 the tower and vestry were added and the church enlarged by removing the dividing wall between the school and chapel; the cost of this work was £119-19-2d. The building we see today is simple in form but it is no worse for that as the elegance of the Georgian windows confirms. The interior is, again, a simple space with a level ceiling; the ceiling is a surprise as one comes to expect lofty spaces with exposed timber trusses. Perhaps the ceiling contributes to the excellent acoustics.
