The building is of 1884, in the Norman-style, by Paley and Austin. There were two earlier churches on the site, the guide book describes the present and the penultimate buildings as out of a textbook but enthuses, along with Ruskin, about the first one. However, Goodhart-Rendel describes it as a capital little building and this statement is closer to the truth. Although at the time of writing the church is undergoing major refurbishment the quality of its form and design shines through, even down to the perimeter gates and railings. There is playfulness in the detail culminating in a weather vane in the form of a fish. Low and unpretentious, the church sits firmly and steadfastly in its setting.
