Originally a chapel of ease, to the church at Millom St John's is first located on a map of 1577. Originally, there was probably no plaster on the walls and, as today, the roof trusses exposed. The roof trusses are worth further examination and show signs of re-use. A ceiling was introduced in the 19th century and removed in 1934 when the coloured drawings we see on the walls, including the Royal Arms of Queen Anne, were discovered. It should be noted that similar paintings can be found at Broughton church. The font is pre-reformation and retains the marks of a lock to prevent people stealing the water for superstitious uses. The pitch-pipe, used for dictating the musical key for singing, is preserved inside the church. The church at Ulpha is fascinating from the perspective of the architectural historian and displays evidence of the many changes it has undergone and, perhaps, Wordsworth, in his sonnets on the Duddon, sums it up when he says "The Kirk at Ulpha, to the pilgrim's eye, is welcome as a star".
