St Peter's Church (first named as such in the 14thC) is the oldest recorded church in the old county of Westmorland. There has been a place of worship on the site since around 690AD and there are the remains of an 8thC Anglian cross shaft in the porch. The War Memorial is based on that design. The original buildings were destroyed in Viking raids and the current building was begun in 11thC. It has been much extended and reordered in the intervening centuries. In 1601 a fire destroyed much of the interior of the building. The walls and arcades survived, along with the vestry door, the parish chest and a few fragments of glass. A substantial restoration was completed between 1868 and 1871, under the direction of Paley and Austin. The Norman tower was demolished and the present one erected. The most recent reordering was in 2002, when the forward altar and removable Communion rails were designed and installed by PJ Hall of Staveley.
