Pevsners blistering condemnation of wilful and irresponsible leaves little scope for gracious consideration. Yet the porch is modestly distinctive, its walling stopping at the tie beam albeit the bell-turret, of an inventiveness defying convention, collides with it and everything else. The semi-circular east apse similarly and inexplicably mis-matches at the roof with short side walls, like a tear in the architects drawing the builder had to botch, or a problem in setting-out that no-one had the heart to remedy. The interior chancel works better and perhaps offers a rationale; the boarded soffit and radiating half trusses appear to work well over the curved whitewashed walls. The figurative stained glass is fading and losing detail. The late C17 almsbox is of interest, as is the chalice of 1459, the oldest pre-Reformation example of its type in Cumbria, though a photograph substitutes for the original, removed for safe-keeping but still used occasionally.
