The relatively late date of the church means the grain of this part of the town already existed and was not generated by it, so surrounding buildings and features are not directly influenced by its presence. However the church has exploited the setting between the sweep of the river and that of Castle Crescent to enviable effect. That impact was impaired after 1978 when the unusual 100ft tall twin west towers (much like minarets) had to be substantially reduced in height down to ridge level. These make the exterior, with its buttresses and sturdy proportions, an engineered aesthetic (not inappropriate, considering the poor ground conditions), and allows the nave to be cavernous; Paley & Austins chancel of 1910 could alone envelop an entire small chapel. However, quantity is not in itself quality: the chancel aisles add that quality though hierarchal space and detail (though moving the altar forward left an awkward gap), including Frosterley marble chequer flooring, but the alterations to create ancillary rooms out of this cavernous space did not enhance either though they have helped ensure this remains a church very much in use.
