A set piece, set apart a serene composition one can image true to the architects evocative sketch, uncompromised in its proportions and qualities by the masons translation. The tower, skilfully just over-sized, becomes the distinctive centre-piece, exploiting perspective and setting to emphasise its reassuring presence. The free perpendicular detailing is extraordinarily prophetic of Arts and Crafts, possessing the latters honesty of materials without concession to innovation. The ashlar interior provides a sculptural setting for bespoke local craftsmanship in the suite of furnishings and font; its tooling invites tactile touch, enriching light as it cascades off reveals and lantern crossing. The window tracery is inventive and fresh, the shouldered lintels also an inspired reinterpretation of antiquity. A C12 capital in the vestry and early C18 structures to the north give this pure, authoritative architectural composition, lineage.
