Pevsners synopsis of a good honest job pays tribute to an architect-designed church (Paley & Austin) that replaced a simpler but apparently larger chapel of 1757. This had not been without fine detail either, having a Venetian east window, etc.; some glass and an inscribed segmental keystone were incorporated into its replacement and bellcote rebuilt in the grounds of the nearby old vicarage. The new church reflected relatively greater wealth from local quarrying and a larger community, so investment was possible in quality of detail, particularly inside, where the bold decision to go for entirely fair-faced stone (even in the vestry) demanded good stone and craftsmanship. The result rewards, with arches, capitals, font and especially the ashlar chancel providing opportunities to play to Paley & Austins strengths. The stained glass generally meets this challenge, but it can be uncompromising for repairs (more obvious defects and re-pointing) and changes (bringing the altar forward). The association with the Rev. Hardy adds distinction.
