This ought to be a picture of comfortable success: prominently located in a historic conservation area, overlooking the green, cheek-by-jowl with shops, visitors, transport. Yet construction was cheap, spending on size not quality, and the legacy is never-ending repairs. That cheapness, at least for the east window, earned Pevsners one-word condemnation: bad. To add insult to injury, where location should bring blessings, this is a church under something of a siege from vandals efforts to test the weakness of the low-level leaded glazing. Endurance has enabled it to remain a focus for events and parish life, made possible by major changes inside in 1982 to create a substantial suite of ancillary rooms for day-to-day communion, leaving the nave (metaphorically) as the reserved sacrament. The architectural contribution to this is not what it might have been, even less so after the subdivisions, but the presence above the green, the tower triumphant with its thrusting pinnacles, stands tall for all to witness.
