Set back from the village green, the tower is so bold as to shield most of the church from view. A fine yew arch leads the short distance to the east lobby, so visitors remain unprepared for what lies within. The axial symmetry of Perpendicular for tower, nave, chancel and aisles is clear inside but lost externally, partly behind the East Chapel and Vestries; all this suggests a church designed from the inside, out. Having squeezed through the small draught lobby (heightening anticipation?), visitors must pass between a trinity of two monumental columns and a plinth of the columns diameter on which is set the font. Sculpted carved from sandstone (pink hues outside, soft cool grey inside), the arcaded aisles make this an awesome space executed with Arts & Crafts attention to detail (stone and wood carving, light fittings, etc.) under a tunnel-vault ceiling of trusses with arc struts. The Chancel would do justice to an abbey or small cathedral in its proportions and craftsmanship, overlooked by the famous east window of 1947 by G. E. R. Smith, (featuring, it is said, local people) in an array of WWII service uniforms and others who served; an important social record. Other fine windows in the East Chapel (also Smith, 1939) and south aisle. Paley & Austin at their best; exemplary.
