Probably most identifiable by its illuminated cross from the M6, the churchs more subtle qualities have been recognised and recorded by NADFAS. Up a rutted track, the battlemented tower and even higher stair turret in rock-faced limestone command the skyline above the steep Westmorland slate nave. Buttresses emphasise the perspective. The vestry and north aisle that would otherwise clutter the clean Perpendicular simplicity of this composition are hidden to the north, but also bringing hidden valleys, junctions and their legacy of maintenance. Fragments of a C16 chapel have been incorporated into a C19 design, explaining the presence of a Green Man in a niche on the east wall. Well-endowed with quite detailed stained glass, the interior can seem under-lit but sheltered. Paley & Austins ashlar chancel certainly lifts the status and the spirits, though evidence of the battle against damp (this time from below) is never far away. The Vestry forms a slightly awkward backcloth to the north aisle chapel, but the partitioning of the rooms in the tower is much more intrusive, lacking a sense of permanence.
