Perched above the A6 with extensive views to the west, with a very wide bell turret designed to be impressive from afar but quite heavy close to. The glazed-in former west porch also better as a belvedere from which to enjoy the view than an adornment. To the east, the WWI memorial lych gate is a very fine tribute, crafted and well proportioned, but needs care. Up close the building is characterised by attention to detail, especially the well executed dressed sandstone surrounds to the smaller windows and doors: lancets with inset square-cut heads, chamfered lintels, drilled drainage holes and lead drips, as well as the slate quoins. Inside the proportions feel over-narrow, the chancel looking especially narrow when viewed from the nave. The east window (Heaton, Butler & Bayne, 1884) seems high and distant and lacks the detail of the Shrigley & Hunt window (1899) or the vibrancy of the Joan Howson window (1937). The three chancel wall paintings on canvas are interesting remnants apparently of an earlier scheme.
