Externally, a curious sense of compression the verticals all seem exaggerated (walls, windows, spirelet, steep roof; the nave, foreshortened by the transepts), together giving the impression of a church squeezed into a tight space (and/or budget). Pevsner describes the design as naughty; it certainly packs a variety of interpretations of free early English onto a limited canvas. The polygonal east apse is crowded externally with dormers and hips; the interior is more successfully integrated into the chancel, perhaps with a calmer colour scheme than the original. The Shrigley and Hunt north east window of 1955 is much the best, though the design of the original 1869 east window (John Hardman of Birmingham) has some merit. Only the wall-mounted Library Box dated 1793 and possibly the bell provide hints of the existence of the earlier churches of 1547 and 1708.
