Built between 1850 and 1854 the church is attributed, in the listing description, to the architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott but he wasnt born until 1880. The architect was in fact his grandfather Sir George Gilbert Scott. A less ornate Gothic style than many Victorian churches its design is said to be an early example of the influence of the Oxford Movement, an affiliate of High Church Anglicans. There are also associations with the architects Austin and Paley who added the octagonal choir vestry in 1889. As with a number of the churches in the area there are examples of stained glass by Henry Holiday amongst others. The interior is enlivened by twentieth century additions including the Mural of 1944 depicting the rush-bearing procession. This was created by Gordon Ransom during the evacuation of the Royal College of Art and it is stunning in its use of subliminal pastel colours. There are also sculptures by the internationally renowned artist Josefina de Vasconcellos who lived in Ambleside.
