The views, to and from the church, are superb. The setting is quite lovely and as one approaches the picturesque quality is enhanced by the cast iron railings enclosing the churchyard. Constructed of slate rubble with ashlar dressings, the fabric was rebuilt in 1868 on the foundations of much of the 1745 building of which only the tower remains. The rebuilding is clearly evident, with an earlier tomb of 1884 now set below a segmental arched recess. There is a significant literary association, as Arthur Ransome, the author of the Swallows and Amazons series of books, is buried in the churchyard. He thought the churchyard was the most peaceful of places and today there is still a sense of tranquillity. The east window by Hardman is flanked by painted metal panels of the Commandments, Lords Prayer and Creed.
