The churchyard provides a lovely setting and is adjacent to the famous Doras field, created by William Wordsworth in memory of his daughter. The church is built of slate with stone dressings and Pevsner describes the tracery as free Perpendicular but it also includes as many examples of the Decorated style. There are many associations with William Wordsworth, who helped choose the site of this church whilst living at Rydal Mount; he composed two poems about the building, including one about Lady Le Fleming who was the benefactress, but he was very critical of the original design!; there is also a Wordsworth pew, used by the family for 25 years before the poets death. Associations with the Le Fleming family include a gallery which was once exclusively for their use. This gallery has an unusual external access but it is now separated by a glazed screen making it a useful and inclusive space. An early 17th century Chalice, with baluster-stem and a quartered Fleming coat-of-arms, was used in the church and is now in the Cathedral Treasury at Carlisle. The central south window is in memory of the step-daughters of Dora Wordsworth and is by Henry Holiday the famous Pre-Raphaelite artist.
