Built on a prominent site, the church was designed by Robert Brass in a simple Gothic style and completed in 1869. The church is constructed of slate rubble with sandstone dressings and has a patterned slate roof. As Pevsner says, St Peters church is a decent honest piece of work but that is, perhaps, the most distinctive feature. It is a large church, built to accommodate the growing population of the time. Some of the pews have since been removed to allow for greater flexibility and the base of the tower was altered in 2006 to form an accessible WC. An interior photograph, taken in 1900, shows the church with painted decoration in the medieval style; although this has since been over painted reducing any significance. The plaster retains evidence of lining out to replicate ashlar stonework. There is some attractive memorial stained glass in the Chancel and Transepts.
