The foundations of the present building include fragments of a church dating from 1203 which was burnt down in 1480. As one would expect of such an ancient church it has undergone many alterations to meet changing demands and this adds to its charm. The architects Paley and Austin enlarged and restored the church in 1870 and much of what you now see, including the marble Reredos, reflects this (it is also well documented). Most of the mural decoration, apart from a 16th century element above a window, dates from this time. Another element of the 1870 restoration was the East Window which is universally praised. The stained glass is mostly from the 15th century but some of the images at the top are believed to date from 1260 having survived vandalism by Cromwells soldiers. A very good collection and contents with paintings and Plate including a Cup and Cover Paten from1682. The introduction of the glazed Curwen Screen below the tower in 2000 is a welcome contemporary addition.
