As Pevsner puts it, a complicated history, later exacerbated by a fire, the outcome of which may now be a valuable facility but accommodated in something that would not have been planned. An original privately endowed chapel of 1848 formed the nucleus of subsequent developments and an association with education. Construction of a south aisle in 1852 created an arcade of round arches on monolithic granite columns amidst subsequent developments, one of the churchs most distinctive features. A north aisle was added in 1857 in a more typical gothic style, then a west extension to the nave, described at the time as an architectural abortion. In 1881, to remedy the error and keep pace with Windermeres relentless population growth, Paley & Austin was entrusted with a safe solution to the west end and a new chancel tower. One intervention was the fire in August 1988 which was followed by small internal alterations and a complete new roof and ceiling. The last major intervention was in the years 2003-2006 when extensive alterations were carried out contributing to the distinctly contemporary interior.
