There is a very useful display inside the building chronicling the alterations to the church. As Pevsner says it is "Ancient" but much altered with the transepts of 1837 and the west tower of c. 1860- 80. Built of rubble stone walls in the distinctive pink sandstone with ashlar dressings the roof is of slate. The east window is attributed to Hardman but the chancel north window of 1899 showing the Adoration of the Shepherds and by Holiday is a joy. Pevsner is dismissive of the transept windows by Ward and Hughes but this is a matter of taste as they make a positive contribution to the overall significance. Internally a small wall brass commemorates Sir Hugh Askew who died in 1562. There is confusion over the date of the font although carved initials could relate to the rector R. Brown c. 1535 (like the church itself the font has been much altered). The village cross of 1897 is by the architects Paley and Austin and sits in the churchyard.
