A beautiful setting for this church with stepping stones bridging the Esk beyond the churchyard. The building is low and squat with the roof dominating the composition. As the guide book says little is known of the history but in 1445 the people of Eskdale petitioned the Pope and the chapel was promoted to a parish church (it has been suggested that one of the bells, now inside the church, dates from this time). There have obviously been many alterations with the East window, of three lights, in the Decorated style; However, the top of the window has been truncated and it must originally have been pointed. The church was rebuilt in 1881 when, unfortunately, ancient stained glass and timber fittings were lost. The font is of interest and is again in the Decorated style although its age is subject to interpretation. The carvings include St. Catherines wheel and an ancient marigold design found on Roman altars and early Christian tombstones.
