How beautiful and surprising is the setting of this little church eventually approached through a farming hamlet. Situated on the River Esk estuary and below Muncaster Fells it appears to be a part of the natural landscape. As one would expect early written history is scarce but the origins of the building are 12th century. There could even have been an earlier church on the site. The relatively poor status of the parish could explain the lucky situation of limited Victorian restorations. As the guide says: Apart from the box pews and the ceiling, which were installed at the beginning of the nineteenth century, the interior must look as it has done during the greater part of the last eight hundred years. The box pews are another lucky survivor and although an alteration in themselves they are now significant in their own right; as many other examples have been replaced. The font is unusual and could be Norman although it may also include the capital of a Roman column. There is Elizabethan plate in the form of a chalice of 1576 and a paten of similar date. Evidence of early Christian worship includes fragments of cross shafts that could be over 1000 years old and are comparable with the Irton Cross. Until the late nineteenth century the two cross shafts on the site were incorporated into the fabric of the church porch.
