Outstanding landmark and period architecture, although designed by a mining engineer (Carlisle Spedding). Built in 1752 as the third church to serve the growing industrial new town and port of Whitehaven (built from 1680 onwards). Contains William Wailes (1870s) and good modern glass. Pevsner believes it has the best Georgian interior in the county in 1967 that would be Cumberland but it is now true for the whole of Cumbria. Its only challengers are St Cuthbert, Carlisle, St Mary, Wigton and St. Andrew, Penrith, although, unlike St James, two of these other churches contain pre-18th century features too.
