At least four churches have been known to have occupied this site from dates; 1130s, Edward III (1327-77), 1711 and the present one of 1854. William and Dorothy Wordsworth were baptised in the third church on 7th April 1770 and the east window (1853) in the current church is a memorial to them. The designer of the present church was not local (after the usual tradition); he was John Clarke of London. Apart from the scale of the building and its handsome stone pulpit, the 180 foot spire is the most outstanding feature of the building, and a considerable local landmark.
