Difficult to know where to start as this church ticks so many Significance Boxes! Substantial parts of the existing walls are 12th, 14th and 16th century with windows to match the later periods. Fragments from earlier churches (six since the 6th century, at the last count) are housed in the church and the font is 14th and 16th century. There are medieval stone effigies, twelve 1523 consecration crosses, an 1846 reclining statue of the poet Southey (d.1842), 16th century brasses, many plaques and a restoration in 1844 by architect Gilbert Scott whose roof, pews (many squeezed into every corner) and screen work still survives. The downside is that to the visitor the worship space generally feels somewhat cluttered, particularly with the west end dominated by a huge organ structure of 1920 (a quality organ by Jardines of Manchester). This arrangement also positions the choir at the rear of the nave, not the usual place from which to lead the singing. Vicar, HD Rawnsley, founder of Nat. Trust. It deserves a higher Listed Grade.
