One of those rare churches where you feel closer to eternity and divine re-assurance. Its significance lies it its alterations and accumulation of features over a long period of time. The list includes Norman font and walls, 13th century windows, 15th century chancel and 17th century extension of chancel to meet an earlier building now gone and a modern replacement of timber furniture by Thompson (The Mouse-man). Medieval grave slabs and tomb recesses are built into the general fabric, and the whole is deliciously garnished with three medieval gargoyles, now a rarity in Cumbria. In spite of the eclectic origins of all its many parts, the church, like many such English historic churches, still achieves a very attractive unity of appearance.
