Believed to be an ‘original’ St Cuthbert foundation. Early church first recorded in 1210 and replaced in 1806 because of dilapidations. Shortage of funds meant the old shell was retained in this scheme. Felt necessary to rebuild again the church in 1884, but also again, insufficient funds were available and much of the early shell was re-cycled again. All this has led to the building feeling architecturally somewhat confusing in style and proportions.
