There has been only one church on this site and that was built in 1838 by the famous Anthony Salvin, architect who worked on Windsor, Alnwick and Warwick Castles, the Tower of London and Carlisles County Hotel, amongst many new build and restoration jobs. The original was totally funded by the Leeds textile industry via the notable Marshall family who were also Lords of Castlerigg. Salvins church had no aisles and a short chancel, and, when aisles were added in 1862 and 1882 and a bay added to the chancel in 1889, the walls were advanced outwards reusing Salvins windows and his wall designs. Consequently the church has a visual and cultural uniformity in 19th century churches that had experienced extensions of such magnitude. It is now almost square in plan which gives an unexpected sense of lightness and generosity to the worship space of a church of this period. Good glass. Hugh Walpoles grave in the yard.
