Although the first record of a place of worship at Loweswater dates from 1125 and artefacts survive from medieval Loweswater churches, the earliest known church was built in 1829 on the site of the present church. In 1884 this small 4 bay church was remodelled on a grander scale with raised roof and new polygonal sanctuary it was probably widened at the same time to increase the number of seats. The Creed Board from the 1829 church and the 14th century bell from an even earlier Loweswater church, are still in use in the present church.
