Built in 1867 by Travis of Manchester St. JamesÂ’ is a conventional Gothic Revival church Comprising single space nave, chancel and with entrance porch and vestry on the north side. The church is built of red sandstone with buttresses to the corners and at mid length of the nave. The slate roof is laid in random and diminishing courses between coped gable upstands and with a single bellcote above the west end gable wall. The most unusual and significant feature of the church is the timber roof, exposed on the inside and achieved without collar ties which gives the nave and chancel a pleasantly uncluttered appearance. There is a well executed wrought iron screen of simple style dedicated to Anne Blackburn in 1875. The organ which has a finely executed organ case was installed as a war memorial. St. JamesÂ’ is undoubtedly one of the more pleasant Gothic Revival churches in the area.
