Originally built as a Chapel of Ease in 1760 transepts were added in 1837 and the tower heightened in 1847. It is the tower with its corner pinnacles and projecting buttresses that is the dominant feature of the church in its townscape setting. The buttresses appear to be largely decorative having not been properly bonded into the tower masonry. Extensive alterations were undertaken in 1890-92 by J H Martindale with the Nave and Aisles re-built incorporating the earlier Sanctuary, Transepts and the Tower. The west door was closed off and north and south porches built. Recently the west door has been re-opened to facilitate disabled access. Externally the walls are of red sandstone with a slate roof in random and diminishing courses.
