Built in 1871 by J A Cory in partnership with C J Ferguson St. Cuthberts replaced a Norman church that was completely demolished in 1869. This very large church incorporates the chancel arch from the Norman church, much restored and almost certainly rebuilt and a C13th doorway re-used in the vestry. C19th architectural detailing follows, broadly, the Early English style. Stone is predominately grey/buff sandstone but with alternating red and buff sandstone voussoirs to the north and south aisle arcade, a curious device for use in the Gothic style, presumably mimicking the pattern of the Norman arch although the authenticity of the original as a model is perhaps questionable. Externally the masonry is laid in random coursed squared rock faced stone between tooled quoins, window surrounds, string and plinth courses with coped gables. The roof is of slate in random and diminishing courses. The tower is particularly distinctive having four gables with pitched slated roofs draining to valley gutters. Late C19th stained glass windows are unsigned. There are wall plaques of 1684 to The Farish family, Reverend Edward Stanley, 1834 and late C19th stained glass and wall plaques to the Ballantine-Dykes family.
