An early C12th church with aisleless Nave, chancel arch and Chancel was very soon altered and extended to provide a North Aisle and lengthened Chancel (1160), North Transept (1260). The South Aisle arcade, believed to be later, is nevertheless of identical style to the North Aisle. Much of the original 1160 church remains, with the aisle arcades piercing the original Nave walls. There is evidence of part of an earlier blocked window arch above the arcade on the south side. The chancel arch is of the original 1160 church and is a particularly fine example with elaborate and profoundly symbolic carving to the capitals. The Nave ceiling is of considerable interest. Placed in 1689 the ceiling is painted in Renaissance style on wood boards with moulded timber cornice which has evidence of extensive gilding. The ceiling is believed to have come from one of the Livery Companies in the City of London. The church displays evidence of C13th, C15th and C17th alterations and additions giving considerable depth to its architectural character and historic interest. Restoration work carried out in 1882 and 1913.
