St. Michael's is a very large church with early mediaeval origins. The base of the tower is Norman the first floor Perpendicular and with Victorian work to the upper floor. The external walls of the body of the church date from the 1770 rebuilding subsequently altered during the rebuilding following the fire of 1888. The church was again gutted by fire in 1994 and again rebuilt between 1997 and 2001. Nothing remains of the 1888 interior. The C15th tomb chest of Sir Christopher Curwen and his wife was badly damaged in the fire but has survived and has been conserved. It is understood that it was a condition of funding for the recent rebuilding that the church should incorporate a conference centre and a church of reduced size more appropriate to present day needs.
