Exterior Description
The church is built in the Early English style. The walls are of brick with dressings and copings to the gables of stone, and the roof-coverings are of clay tiles. The west wall is tall and flat with plain buttresses at the junction of nave and aisles. A rose window in the gable rides above two pairs of lancets. The aisle walls are articulated by small trefoil-headed windows, grouped in threes, between plain buttresses. The larger single windows of the clerestory are linked by a stone string-course at the springing of the brick window arches. The transepts are relatively small. In the gable-wall of each one is a triplet of lancets with a quatrefoil above. On the east side of the chancel the whole width of the wall is filled with a group of five large lancets under an arched hood-moulding. Above the lancets is a rose window with a semi-circular hood-moulding.
Interior
Interior Description
The nave arcade is of five bays of equilateral arches resting on cylindrical columns with moulded capitals and bases. The boarded roof has curved arch braces which rest on corbels between the clerestory windows. Alternate braces are joined to wall-shafts springing from the spandrels of the arches. Each short transept is screened from the crossing space by a trumeau which is in the same plane as the nave walls. The responds on the crossing piers have massive fluted corbels. The chancel is only fractionally lower than the nave and the chancel arch is tall and does not emphasise the division. On the south side of the chancel there is a large arched opening to accommodate the organ.
