The Church building was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott and building commenced in 1869. It is built of Red Sandstone with a westmorland slate roof and is well maintained to a high standard. The style is of early English middle gothic and has pairs of narrow lancet windows and cluster columns carrying stiff foliage capitals. The Church sits in fairly large grounds which houses the Parish Hall and a Calvary War Memorial. The Grounds, Church and Parish Hall are in an elevated position and clearly visible to passers by.

The construction is of load bearig ashlar sandstone in irregular coursings.
There are pitched roofs over both the nave and north and south aisles The construction is of pitched timber trusses with exposed rafters and covered with Westmorland /Burlington slates. The Bellcote to the tower has a copper clad roof of a pyramidal design and the main tower is slated and similar pyramidal design.
The internal layout of the Church features arcades of five bays which separate the north, south and central nave The chancel has a lower roof line and is flanked by the Lady Chapel to The North side and the obsolete pipe organ room to the south side which sits at the foot of the bell tower. The Chancel features excellent carved oak choir stalls and both the Hign Altar and Lady Chapel each have a reredos and are of very fine carving. There is a Martyrs' Chapel situated in the South Isle and a Childrens' Chapel on the North Isle together with a Walsingham Shrine at the Eastern end of the North Isle.. There is an elegant Statue of Our Lady carrying the Baby Jesus which is mounted to the right of the Chancel steps.
