The Chancel of St Nicholas is geographically in the West, so ordered due to its exposed position and the severity of the North-West gales. The Harrison family ran a large Shipping Company from Liverpool and so St Nicholas has connections with the Liverpool waterfront and docklands. St Nicholas was also used as a ‘spotting’ tower during WW2 due to its location on the waterfront with views across Liverpool Bay.
The exterior face of the Church is of rock-faced Storeton Stone with rabbed-faced quoins and dressings.

The roof beams inside the Church are designed in the style of an upturned hull of a boat. The Church also has the most complete set of Shrigley and Hunt Stained Glass Windows which include a window known as the Massey Window which was given to the Church by George and Saidy Massey in memory of their son Hubert Hammond Massey who died at Flanders June 16th 1915. The window was one of the first to depict a soldier in modern day uniform, that of the 10th (Scottish) King’s Liverpool Regiment, fallen in battle and resting at the foot of a shell shattered Cricifix. Hubert’s medals are fixed to the window surround. The Church has two internal war memorials. One of the war memorials has a screen that was painted by an artist named Clarke. The organ was built by Nicholson and Co of Worcester.
