The early history of the chapel building is little known. It is suggested that this includes use as a stable during the 17th century and as a place of worship by nonconformists until 1705. In 1747 the Church of England took over responsibility for the building and it was restored and furnished by public subscription. In 1761 it was again repaired, before a more exhaustive restoration took place in 1876, at which time the main church was also built.
The chapel building as it stands is an agreeable mixture of materials and periods. The old half-timbering survives in the east and north walls of the chancel and the rest has been rebuilt, at various times, in stone rubble, dressed stone and brick. The exterior wall surfaces have been whitened.
