Various sources indicate that this Grade I listed church was founded in 960 by St Dunstan, who was then the Archbishop of Canterbury. It is thought that the original building was constructed in timber and that this was replaced in stone during the 12th Century. A serious fire in 1389 destroyed most of the church building with the exception of the four stage Tower and part of the walling of the Chancel and North Aisle which date from the 13th Century, together with the west window and shingled broach spire which are of the 14th Century. The rebuilding programme was carried out in the period between 1410 and 1420 in the Perpendicular style, with the Chancel being constructed first, and the new Nave then fitted between the Chancel and the original Tower.

The castellated two storey south porch with stair turret also dates from this reconstruction phase and similarly the north and south aisles. The clerestory to the Nave was created in the early 1500s and the roof height raised around this period.
Slater and Carpenter restored the church in the late 19th Century, between 1868 – 1870, and their alterations include the ceiling in the Chancel as well as the west window of the south aisle.
With the exception of the Nave which is natural stone finish, the walls are plastered and painted. The roof structure to the Nave and Chancel is generally exposed and the ceiling is formed in timber boards, whilst the Aisles and Lady Chapel are plastered with exposed beams. The south porch has a stone ribbed roof structure. Internally, there are tiled floors generally, with parquet in the Lady Chapel.
The church interior contains a number of significant fittings with a series of chancel screens. These screens now form the contemplative area at the East End of the North Aisle. The font and pulpit are 17th Century pieces, whilst the two chandeliers and altar rail with turned balusters date from the 18th Century. Nineteenth century fittings and fixtures include the nave pews and pew platforms as well as the Nave and Chancel ceilings and most of the stained glass, including the east window, although some windows have 20th Century work. There are also a number of floor and wall memorials dating from the late 17th to 19th Centuries.
