It is a possible pagan site, but there are no traces of an earlier church due to complete rebuilding in the 14th century. Alfriston was the largest settlement on the Cuckmere and the highest point ships could reach.
Very fine squared flintwork. Built on quite a different scale to other churches - the sense of space gives it the nickname 'the cathedral of the Downs'. All built at one time circa 1360 on a 'greek cross' pattern - nave and chancel the same length and transepts nearly as long.
One of the few churches to have a new West Gallery - the previous one taken down in 1887 and a new one installed 1995 with office space beneath. Bells are rung from the floor of the crossing. Fine Kempe windows signed with wheatsheaf - the south transept in 1914. Easter sepulchre and tomb canopies in chancel. Shepherd's burial with tuft of wool recorded in 1932.
