Description of Archaeology and History
The original Christ Church opened for worship in 1832. It was situated in the city centre and had the smallest of Coventry’s ‘Three Spires’. During an air raid on the city on the night of 10th April 1941 an incendiary bomb started a fire in the roof which resulted in the total destruction of the church. The congregation moved to St Michael’s Mission in Whitefriars Street where they continued to worship for the next fifteen years. Plans for a new Christ Church in Frankpledge Road, Cheylesmore, were developed and, on March 26th 1956 Palm Sunday, the new hall and side rooms were dedicated and licensed for services. Two years later, on March 27th 1958, Bishop Cuthbert Bardsley consecrated the new Christ Church.
