The chancel is 12th Century while the nave and tower were added in the 13th century. The north doorway is moulded in the early 13th Century style and at that time the church would have been lit by single long lancet windows. During the 14th Century considerable changes were made to the structure. The narrow windows were enlarged and replaced by ones which were wider and had more decorated tracery; these can still be seen today. This work was probably done by local masons. At the same time, two chapels were built out from the south side of the church.
Any further plans to remodel the church were most certainly halted by the Black Death in the middle of the 14th Century, which affected building in most parish churches for the next hundred years. However, in the 16th Century the south wall of the nave between the two chapels was removed and the outer chapel walls joined, forming what is now the south aisle. The present pier arcade was built during this alteration and this is an unusual architectural structure.
The north porch is a 17th Century addition to the entrance.
Civil War damage was repaired towards the end of the 19th Century.
