Description of Archaeology and History
The church was built in 1898 following the use of a Mission Room for the previous 5 years. In 1920 an ex-army Nissen Hut was erected as a church hall at the east end of the church which was then destroyed by fire in 1957. A replacement hall was built in 1961-63 and adjoined the church building via a new small room to the south of the chancel. The roof was replaced in 1995.
Exterior Description
Christ Church is a long and low building with a continuous pitched roof to both nave and chancel with a prominent open bellcote surmounting the west end. There are roughly 7 bays to the building, those to the nave divided by plain buttresses with long offsets up to the eaves.
On the south face there are plain rectangular openings, those in the nave being wider and divided with mullions to create three lights. The nave openings are set within rendered panels and timber framing.
The vestry extends at a right angle from the south west end of the building, occupying two bays; it has a hipped roof. Its west and north faces have white render set within timber panels. On the north side the organ chamber extends slightly with a hipped roof.
The east window is comprised of five lights under a wide four-centred arch. The outer two lights are simple lancets and the inner three taller with cusped heads. The opening is flanked by buttresses with stepped shallow offsets. The west window is of two cusped lights with an irregular trefoil overhead under a barely pointed arch. Externally the arch is partially obscured by two buttresses rising to become the base of the bellcote.
At the north east corner there is a small flat-roofed extension creating a link to the 1960s community centre which occupies the site to the immediate east.
