Ninth century foundation by the monks of Lindisfarne fleeing Viking incursion. Grade 1 listed building, consisting of church with spire. The churchyard is open only for ashes burial and is owned by the local council.The church is situated in the centre of the town.

The body of St.Cuthbert lay in the church for over 100 years until further incursions forced the monks to remove it, eventually settling and founding Durham Cathedral. It houses several stone effigies brought into the building by a past Lord Lumley and houses the Lady Alice brass in the baptistry.
The Church has a mural showing the granting of the land on which the Church was founded by King Athelstan and several very good stained glass windows made by distinguished designers from the Victorian period. The Church also houses the memorial cross from the Butte of Warenne at the Battle of the Somme.
