The church is a capacious, straight forward building in the Late Perpendicular style with little elaboration. The west front has a large five-light window set high in the wall and three small cinquefoil-headed lights below, the arrangement suggesting a gallery within.
Building is open for worship
Ground plan:
Nave of five bays with aisles and clerestory, porches within the western bays of each aisle; chancel with polygonal apse, north organ chamber and south vestry. The latter is attached to the Vicarage by a passage which becomes the hall of the house.
The parish was formed in 1883, and the church was built in 1885-6. The architect was Joseph Hall Morton of South Shields, who was Surveyor to the Rural Sanitary Authority. The cost was £3,000, the Commissioners gave the site and £1,000 and the Church Building Society £60.
The church is a capacious, straight forward building in the Late Perpendicular style with little elaboration. The west front has a large five-light window set high in the wall and three small cinquefoil-headed lights below, the arrangement suggesting a gallery within. At the corners, which project slightly beyond the aisles, are angle buttresses and the west walls of the aisles are pierced by four-centred arched doorways leading into porches formed within the first bay of each aisle. The north and south walls of the aisles each have two two-light windows and the clerestory follows much the same pattern, all the windows having cinquefoiled heads. The division between nave and chancel is marked externally by a small spirelet surrounded by detached oak pinnacles on the ridge of the roof and a gable on the south side terminates in a chimney for the boiler below. The organ chamber on the north side is arranged as a transept and the apse has three sides, each pierced by a two-light transomed window with cinquefoiled ogee heads to the lights and simple panel tracery.
Stained Glass
1924
The east window has two lights representing Christ with two Saints (probably St. Simon and St. Jude) above and The Crucifixion below, a War Memorial inserted in 1924, by G.J. Baguley and Son.
Stained Glass
One small light in the west wall shows The Baptism of Christ.
The interior of the church is similarly plain but dignified, with four-centred arches to the nave arcades resting on octagonal pillars moulded capitals and bases. The doors to the west porches have Caernarvon heads and there is a timber west gallery between them. The floors are of stone flags in the alleys and wood blocks under the pews. The roof which runs through the church (the chancel arch only taking the form of a doubled set of roof principals) is boarded to give a vault of five faces divided into square panels by moulded ribs. The double timbers at the chancel arch have some restrained Art Nouveau detailing. The nave roof is painted red and yellow, the chancel roof blue, to remarkable effect. The walls also, which were originally of exposed brick, have been painted white for the most part. Below the chancel arch there are three steps and above them are returned stalls of oak. The floor beyond is of slabs of composite material. On the north side an arch opens to the organ chamber (which also communicates with the north aisle through an arch) but on the south side there is simply a blank brick wall. Only the east window has stained glass, the other two apse windows having panes of tinted glass.
