The original church of St Peter's was built on instructions from Benedict Biscop in 674-75. The west wall and porch os the current building are from this date. The rest of the church has been added and adapted over time. The tower was added on top of the porch before AD1000. The rest of the church was built in the 14th century. The remains of Anglo-Saxon carvings can be seen inside the porch.
Building is open for worship
The church is free to visit and open from 10am-3pm every day. There is a cafe and toilet facilities. Car parking available within the church grounds, as well as a large car park at the National Glass Centre close by.
