Formerly known as St.Andrew without Barnwell Gate, the present church was designed by Ambrose Poynter and built in 1842-3 but, it incorporates some earlier material and a large number of monuments and some other contents from the earlier church. Ambrose Poynter designed two other, and inferior, churches in Cambridge - Christ Church, Newmarket Road, and St. Paul, Hills Road.
The walls are of ashlar, and the roofs slate-covered; the style is that of the late 15th century. The tower is of four stages with angle buttresses on the east, diagonal buttresses on the west and an embattled parapet. The second stage has single pointed lights in the south and west walls, and a two-light window with tracery in the north wall. In each wall of the bell-stage is a three-light window with vertical tracery in a four-centred head.
Stained Glass
Mid 19th Century
A number of windows of mid-19th century date, including the east window (incorporating the arms of Christ's College, the See of Ely, Queen Victoria, the Deanery of Ely, and Emmanuel College) the first, second and fifth window on the south side and the west window.
The east window is of five cinquefoiled and transomed lights with vertical tracery in a four-centred head; the internal splays and soffits are panelled, and jamb-shafts at the angles are continued up above the head to support a straight moulded cornice enclosing traceried spandrels. The east and side windows of the aisles are all of much the same character as one another and are of three lights with external labels carried across the wall face bet - weer the buttresses and, internally, with panelled splays and soffits and wood pelmets. The roof over sanctuary and nave is in five bays divided by queen-post trusses with curved braces below the tie-beams and others between the queen-posts and the collar beams; all the spandrels are enriched with pierced tracery; the aisle roofs are of ten bays, each subdividedby chamferedbeams with enrichments at the intersections, and all these roofs are contemporarywith the building.
